Web Design Problems
The Browser Problem
Believe it or not our browsers have a mind of their own. Or more precisely, a mind of their own Creator.
Although most of the basic HTML tags (HTML tags are codes used to create a Web Page) can be understood by most browsers, there are some tags that are understood differently by different browsers. In Fact, there are even tags that can be read by only one type of browser.
This difference is not just between each type of browser (eg. Explorer vs Navigator) but also between versions of each browser (e.g. Explorer 3.0 vs Explorer 5.0) AND also between platform versions (e.g. windows vs Mac OS).
Since there is no, absolutely no, way that your prospects are using the same version of a certain type of browser on a particular platform, you will have to be careful when designing your web site.
To make your site viewable by as many prospects as possible, here are some steps you can take -
The Display Problem
The Browser is not the only problem you have to consider. There is also the display problem. More specifically, the resolution and the color capabilities of your prospect's computer monitor.
Monitor Resolution
The Most common monitor resolution for a PC are 640x480, 800x600, 1024x870, 1280x1024 and 1600x1200.
And for Macintosh: 512x384, 640x480, 800x600, 832x624, 1024x768, 1152x870, 1280x1024 and 1600x1200.
That's quite a lot of numbers. Your Prospect can be on any one of these resolutions.
One solution to this problem is to Design for the common monitor resolution. However the most common resolution is currently tied between 640x480 and 800x600. Between the two, 640x480 is the safest cause it can be viewed by both resolutions without requiring you visitor to scroll to the right to see the rest of the page.
Color Capabilities
Display problems also include color problems. The More common number of colors displayed by a computer monitor are : 17 million colors, 65,000 colors or 256 colors And the colors between a Macintosh and a PC differ a bit.
A solution to this is to Design using the Web Palette. The Web Palette contains 216 colors that are made up from the cross-section of Mac and Windows system color palette.
Now What does all these Techno Mambo Jumbo mean?
Well. put simply, your web site could look terrific on one computer and at the Same time horrendous on another.
And What does this mean? Because there is just no way of telling if your Design will look perfect on ALL Computers, don't spend a lot of time tweaking your Design to make it perfect.
Remember, your aim is to create a professional looking fast loading web site in as Little Time as Possible.
So the Bad news is, there isn't really a way where you can make your web site look the same on everybody's computer. Maybe there is but you will have to take a degree in web Design to find out.
The Good News is you can create the almost perfect website for MOST Computers if you stick to certain rules. And if you follow this step by step, you will breeze through this.
So Try not to venture too far away from the proposed Design unless you know what the consequences of your actions will be.
